What is the proper intake manifold for a.......

1964 coupe, 327ci/300hp, 4 spd manual, no A/C SN# 4100818 (car build date 9/16/63)? The NCRS JG says early 1964 L75's (300hp) cars had a #3799349 intake manifold. But it doesn't say what "early" is. I think 2 weeks into the build year is early, but that's just me. Would it be incorrect to put a #3844459 on it? I want to put it back right and am willing to wait to find the proper part. Lastly, is the 6 month rule good in this application? Is it "better" to have the intake date closer to (2-4weeks prior to) the engine build date which is 9/11/63? Thanks,
    Patrick

    Patrick -

I don't have the '63-'64 JG, but the Pocket Spec Guide says the 3799349 manifold is "usage unverified" for 1964.

I'm in contact with a guy at Tracy Performance who sells used engine parts and he says his experience has been that they didn't make the 3799349 during the 5 or so months preceeding my build date. Or at least he hasn't seen any. Maybe he is just trying to sell me what he has (he wants to sell me a 3844459). I've seen that phrase "usage unverified' in other web sites with reference to the 3799349's use on the 1964 300hp. I've searched this forum for the above intake number finding only a few posting and nothing on point. Hopefully others can weigh in. Thanks,
      Patrick

        Patrick-----

One thing to keep in mind: if you find a GM #3844459 with a date that would be correct for your car (and, especially, one that's very close to the cast date of your other engine components) then it COULD have been used on your car whether or not it was actually originally used on your car. A manifold with a correct casting date was used on SOME car and there's no reason, at all, to believe that it was only used on the other Chevrolet models using it (passenger, Chevelle).

Another question: does the car have power brakes? If so, is the GM #3817691 hose support bracket present?

The GM casting #3799349 and GM casting #3844459 were identical EXCEPT for the location of the power brake vacuum take-off. A 1964 Corvette with power brakes originally using the rear-of-carb flange style vacuum take-off would also have to use the 1963 style GM #3817691 hose support bracket. If it used the rear-of-manifold vacuum take-off, then no hose support bracket would be present. Of course, the presence of this "clue" would only apply to cars with power brakes.

My car does have Power Brakes, however the carb is a Roch Q-jet and thus not original to the car. I'll have to look for a bracket, but since the intake and carb are not original I would have to be pretty lucky to have the bracket you mentioned above still attached to the new carb.

I know of someone who has two #3844459 intakes, one dated G 10 3 (July 10, 1963) and the other dated I 4 3 (Sept 4, 1963). Of the two which might be more appropriate for a car with a build date of 9/16/63, engine build date of 9/11/63 and an engine cast date of 9/3/63?

          Thanks

My vote is the Sept one 9/4 one day later than the engine works for me.

Of the two which might be more appropriate for a car with a build date of 9/16/63, engine build date of 9/11/63 and an engine cast date of 9/3/63?

I'd go with the one dated 9/4/63. I'd say it's perfect.

Re: What is the proper intake manifold for a......

My car does not have any sign of a bracket. The current configuration has the vaccum going into the back of the manifold (not the carb). The current manifiold is a 1968 version.

How authorative is the "Pocket Guide"? and

I have two votes to use (get) the Sept #3844459 manifold. Does anybody want to help build to this consensus?

On a side note, I found a pink receipt under the drivers seat a few weeks ago while I was trying to find some screws I had dropped under the seat. I didn't take any immediate notice to it until the other day. It appears to be the original purchase receipt when the owner prior to me purchased the car. (I bought the car from a dealer who bought it from this guy). It was dated October 30, 1974 and says "Receiced from Gary A. (name of prior owner according to the dealer I bought it from) $896.00, Check # 2553 for Corvette Stock # 210, Bal due $60.00". At first I thought this was a repair receipt. But upon further reflection, I believe it is the actual purchase receipt. I'm pretty excited about it. Unfortunately it does not show the milage or any other detail at that point in time. But I thought it was an interesting find. I'm going to mount an expidetion next week to see if there is anything else hiden in the car.
