    L-88 Cam Information

I was looking in the archives for information on a cam that I removed from the 427 motor in my Chevy and came across a thread from Joe Lucia and Clem dated December 2005 concerning GM# 3904367. This is the cam that I have. There was discussion about whether it was available as a service or production part number. To my knowledge, the motor the cam was installed in was bought from a local Chevrolet parts counter as an L-88 short block in 1972. The stamp pad was not stamped on the block. The casting date was 1972. The casting number is 3999289, which my parts book lists as a 1972 454 270 HP two bolt main block. However, the block is actually a four bolt and has the oil cooler provision. I assume when GM needed blocks to build crate motors they used whatever was available. Can anyone confirm this is the case? I have the cam available and if anyone has questions I'll try to answer them. There are some casting dates and paint spots visible - the motor probably had less than 500 miles on it when the cam came out in 1995.

    Re: L-88 Cam Information

The 9289 block was used for several years, from 1971 to 1979 according to the information on the Mortec site. My '69 L/88 had a '75 dated 9289 block in it when I bought it. The engine was purchased, as a crate L/88, in 1977.

      Re: L-88 Cam Information

I purchased a new L88 short block that was over the counter. It had a CE stamp. The engine was assembled in 1967 and was stamped for a 68 engine. It contained the cam you mentioned.
