C2 Glove Box Door Project-It Works

    Hi All,

I used Bob Young's instructions on replacing the glove box insert without drilling out the peened studs on the back. I used his addendum method where only the insert around the emblem is cut out, and the new trimmed insert is slid in over the top of the old. I followed the instructions fairly close but took some variance.

I found the procedure very easy. On this practice run with a 64-65 door, it took about 3 hours. When I do my original 67, I think I'll get it down to about an hour and a half. Here's how it came out:

    Here's what I started with:

Below is a picture show of the procedure.

    Tools and templates:

The paper template of the area inside the chrome trim is first made. The smaller cardboard template of the position of the emblem is made to be used to drill the holes in the insert for the emblem. Since my new insert came with the holes already drilled, I didn't use this template, but accurately measured the position of the emblem and put it on the paper template.

    Cutting Out the emblem:

I first marked a line 1/4" out from the periphery of the emblem then cut along the line with a dremel cutter blade. Only used 3 blades, and had the emblem out in 10 minutes. The emblem has peened over studs to attach it to the insert. I used a bench grinder to grind away the peened over area of the studs to remove the emblem from the insert piece. The remaining portion of the emblem stud was then filed with a points file to remove any burrs and bevel the end. The emblem was then test fit to the new insert. It is eventually glued in place with epoxy, or my preference, silicone adhesive.

    New Insert Preparation:

The paper template is then placed over the new insert and a line marked on the insert 1/4" outboard of the template. The cutout portion of the insert was used to accurately position the emblem on the template and punched holes in the template in the right places. Measurements were checked from the edge of the emblem to the edge of the template to set the template in the correct postion. Then use tin snips to cut the insert along the marked line.

    Installing the insert:

The trimmed insert is then slid into the groove between the chrome trim and the old insert. I left the protection film on my new insert, and used tape to mark the final position insert. If the film has been removed one should tape the final position of the insert on the bottom and side which is inserted first. I cleaned out the groove with a piece of sheet metal and actually put some Triflow in the groove for lubrication.

I inserted the right corner of the insert first to the right then down until the the left side and top of the insert falls into the depression. Then you need to slide it back up and to the left to the final position. It's a pretty tricky manuever, and mine was so tight I had to put the emblem in place to get some grip on the flat insert. Bob's instructions indicated to use dabs of glue between the old and new insert, but I didn't glue mine since the fit was so tight. I suppose if it loosens up I can glue it along the top but it is so tight I think it will stay in place.

Well that's about it, see the picture below with the film removed and the emblem in place. Looks like I'm going to have to repaint the front, I scratched up the fresh paint working on the insert.

    Having fun,

    Jerry Fuccillo

Jerry - OUTSTANDING job AND presentation....Kudos to you for taking the time to photograph your step-by-step procedures and permitting the results to be viewed by our NCRS friends!

Although I did the initial article, YOU deserve the credit that will encourage others to follow your lead and maintain the ingegrity of their glove box doors. Certainly not totally original, but much better than ruining the back side of the door when you drill out the retainers.

My hat is off to you, and thanks for sharing, Bob.

Re: C2 Glove Box Door Project-It Works

I've learned a lot from this discussion board, but this is one of the better. I wish along with probably a lot of others that I would have had this a few years ago when I drilled my rivets out to re-do my door on my '66. I've lost points on flighting cause the judges got good eyes! Great job Gerald, and THANK YOU.
