    C1 - 1960 Fuel Tank

I am cleaning up and installing the gas tank in 1960 #2348 and have a few questions:

Were there any inspection or factory markings on the tanks? I found red freehand initials or symbols, they are so far illegible, on the left, drivers side front of the tank. The marks look like thin red marker of some kind and cover an area about 4" by 5".

Were there variations in tanks throught the C1 production?

Was there any reason for overspray on the tanks during production?

Yo David - How ya been...

My limited knowledge on C1 tanks... Have not removed a tank so no clue on what might be marked on tank itself. I have seen crayon markings on underside of tank fiberglass cover, usually a number as I recall.

On overspray, I have concluded, subject to correction, that prior to body paint, the tank was installed. The cover was put in place, but not fastened during primer & paint. For that reason, depending on just how the cover was positioned, some (but very little) overspray might appear on tank. Probably almost none. Then, after paint, wiring and fuel lines were installed - then tank cover was sealed & screwed in place.

Hope you are well, Best, Dennis

      Dennis--
That's some pretty good observation for a guy who traded a 58 for a rifle! That's exactly my experience, too. And what about the 24-gallon tanks? Seems like they just sprayed away on the tank and everything that was connected to it!

Hey, responses from two of the best! I can't read the red marks, thought they may have been marks from a junk yard sale. There is paint under the holes for the power top wiring and float/sending unit wire hole, which matches Dennis' description. Other than that just dirt and grime. Any idea of differences in the tank over the 56 to 62 production, if any? Thanks -
