Many thanks to all of the guys who responded to my question last week. I did mention that i would try to get a better picture of the pad, hopefully showing th broach marks. I've attached that picutre - best I can do with my limited photo skills.

John, in both pictures, the engine appeared to me to have never been repainted...do you know if that's true? The reason I ask is to confirm it as an examplte of the masking method. In this case, tape was used, but no attempt was made to completely cover the pad. My understanding is that grease was also used to keep paint off the pad.

My only other comment is that from the way the light is reflecting off the pad surface, it appears to have been cleared, and this of course was NOT done at the factory. I didn't see this in the first picture...maybe you added an oil film?

Chuck, I've owned the car about 7 years, and while I have not repainted the engine, I believe that it was repainted at some time - just too good a condition not to have been. Haven't touched the pad either, but I can see what you're talking about. I'm planning on pulling the engine for a rebuild this winter - the reason for my wanting to get your views on originality. I will definitely take care not to have the pad disturbed.
