After tearing up 3 sets of belts on my '74 I'm wondering what is going on? The small belt that runs between the water pump and the crank continues to shread if you run the A/C for any length of time at all. I've installed all the belts according to the assembly manual diagrahm and everything is tight, what is going on. It is almost impossible to put this one belt on and now I have to do it again. Any thoughts? Oh, if it matters, the car is 454, P/S and A/C.

Yes, the captive waterpump belt can be very difficult to replace. However, the part that's a real mystery is that this belt should be completely non-influenced by A/C operation. Plus, except for a defective or an "impinged upon" belt, I've never seen a V-belt shread.
My guess would be that there is something contacting this belt which may or may not be influenced by the A/C drive system. Perhaps, some sort of misalignment or improper installation of parts. Do you have the idler pulley properly installed and in the proper contact with the belt. The idler pulley should force the belt inward and it's the OUTSIDE surface of the belt that should contact the idler pulley. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
