I was just finishing up the threaded insert repairs to my A.I.R holes and noticed that the exhaust pipe studs are different from the left to right manifolds. The left manifold has a hex on the tip so that a socket could be used for installing or removing each stud but the right manifold doesn't have this feature. It has an unthreaded portion to make starting the nut easier but without the hex. I'm just curious if this was the way they came or if one side was replaced at one time.
I've never seen an original GM manifold stud with a hex end or any other sort of wrenching surface. However, it is possible that later GM SERVICE studs (GM #14088827, 14088828) have such provisions. Obviously, it's possible that aftermarket studs were/are available this way.
Original GM studs should have had such a wrenching surface on the studs, but they did not.
