C2 Fuel pickup sock (black ?)

Here's a view you probably don't see that often; the interior of a late '65 fuel tank.

Was surprised to see that the sock is black -- I would have thought white would be a better filter media color to show plugging.

I'm pretty certain that the sender/pickup is original (I've owned the car for 18 years) and it has the proper "S" near the outside electrical terminal, along with AC made in USA. Also, note the "90 OHMS" stamped in the side of the rheostat.

Tank also has the big "A" with small "O" and "L" and "CO" stamped in the bottom (you can see the reverse imprint just forward of the pickup flange, near the sock).

So is the black sock correct ?

First, the tank is out and on the bench. Removed the neck (the short one on a convertible) to replace the cork gasket. can get my hand in to move the float up, but not far enough to wipe down the silt -- think I'll try a rag on a stick. Too scared I'll get my arm stuck in there. There's just a few spots of surface rust that rub off.

Used my trusty Nikon Coolpix S4, which goes through the opening of the tank with 1/4" to spare. Held it between thumb and forefinger (on the shutter). Could only partly see the screen, so I took about 5 shots.

But mostly it's 'cause I've got skinny hands and arms

I just removed the filter sock in the '76 and it is black too. When I changed out the one in the '67 a few years ago it was black as well.

I wonder if it is ok to reuse the sox if it feels to be in good shape?? I seem to recall a green sox that I have in my spare parts. I wonder what the story is with it?? Terry

If it doesn't have any holes in it and not coming apart, I'd reuse it. My original was not reusable, and I replaced it with a white sock off a repro.
It didn't fit the intake shaft very well and was too loose.

I wound up putting some gas resistant sealant on the shaft to make it stay in place.

I wouldn't use the old one. It depends on your car, but think that even one in a "new" '76 is 30 years old.

Mine in my '68 was black just like these shown. It was very brittle and cracked at my touch. Imagine that going into your pump and then filter. The fuel filters for my '68 are between $30 and $40, depending on where you can find them. I don't want to fill one with the screen so I can toss it, just so I can save $10 on a new screen.

I got a new screen at the AC Delco distributor. It is off-white, so if color is an issue, then you don't want this one. I can't remember what I paid, but I believe it was just under $10.

I have a medium green one here next to my desk. I wonder if they turn black over the years?? I would tend to stay away from reusing them also. My gas tank transducer looks replaced so I am wondering if it is in good condition or not. It is an AC transducer though. Terry
