    '67 Tie Rod Ends...

Of all the information that I've been given here and other places, as well as the latest '67 NCRS Judging Manual, everything seems to indicate that the steering linkage was painted semigloss black or an asphaltic coating "as an assembly".

The picture below is a real deal NCRS Duntov award car. As you can see, the tie rod ends are a natural finish, with the inspection daub of paint as opposed to the tie rods, which are semigloss black. What do you think of this? Did the judges miss the call or did the owner of the car get a point deduct for not having the tie rod ends painted black? Thanks for your opinion. PT

I don't know if the judges blew it, or not. However, I feel very confident in saying that the condition of the tie rod ends is not as the car left St. Louis.

The AIM clearlt shows the steering linkage as an assembly as delivered to st Louis, not as shown in the picture.

        Patrick,
The steering linkage was indeed painted semi-gloss black as an assembly. Possibly The Duntov Award car was an older restoration before the current manuals were printed. The steering assemblies were commonly restored like this in the 1990's.

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I have the steering linkage out of the car now and will be painting it today. It's much easier to paint it correctly the first time and install it, rather than have it put on your "laundry list" as incorrect when you get it judged. PT

            Patrick------

I think that one of the reasons that folks may have avoided painting the tie rod ends is that doing so would have covered their "accurately re-created yellow and blue inspection daubs". The problem is that the assembly manufacturing plant didn't care, at all, about covering these up after the linkage was assembled and did so "with reckless abandon".

              Pat,

Don't forget that the grease zerts were put in at the St. Louis assembly plant after the assembly was painted black and are to be a natural or bright color, not painted. black. This was discussed a few weeks ago in this board.
