bigger problem is the valve stem tips

The valve stem tips take quite a beating with stock rocker arms. About 20 years ago, many SS valves did NOT have hardened tips, therefore it was essential to use lash caps if you wanted them to survive. Nowadays it seems that most SS valves have the hardened tips so you don't have to worry.

Re: bigger problem is the valve stem tips

We tried lash caps way back in the early 70's but they never really seemed to save anything. Seemed like the only time we had any problems with valve tips was when the engine was operated in a valve float RPM range. At that point, nothing saves valve tips, or any other part of the valve train.

I'm surprised it took the aftermarket people that long to use hardened tips.
