    Bumper Re-Chroming Quality

I have three and a half complete and original sets of front and rear Bumpers for a C2 ... all of them need re-chroming to bring back original luster and brilliance.

These GM Bumpers used on the 1963-67 Corvettes often had slight depressions in the outer surface where the inside bumper attachment brackets were welded on. After the bumpers were chrome-plated, the slight irregularities were often visible to the discerning eye.

After speaking with two 'show-chrome' plater companies, they recommend sufficient copper-plating so as to make the bumper surfaces perfectly smooth.

My question or statement here, about that, is by having the bumper surfaces smoothed out will render them without their original irregularities. Is this an important consideration?

What do enthusiasts, who bring back their cars to NCRS specifications, do with regard to ensuring their bumpers 'look' original??

The new 'reproduction' bumpers available these days, at least the two sets I've looked at, are substandard in quality and are similar to the originals, but not the same in usefulness and/or structural detail.

Any comments are welcome to help me understand the best approach to take with the chrome-platers.

    Pete,

What crhome shop are you contemplating? Some may suggest another depending upon what you seek in the way of quality (whether Pebble Beach, NCRS or street/show quality). The choice is yours alone.

NCRS judges will LOOK for the irregularities and sharp inside corners that get filled-in and/or buffed round by overly exhuberant workers in some chrome shops. Best approach is research, research, research, study and select. The archives has plenty of info on shops, their turn-around time, etc.

The term I read many times is - "Over Restored". Applies to chrome, paint, etc.

That term ("Over Restored") applies to all restored cars on the show field just some are more than others.

I took a four point hit at the Western Regional this year because of the "irregularities" in my original bumpers. The same judge took another substantial point deduction because the twenty year old lacquer paint looked "overrestored."
