    '67 engine build date question

    Hi All,

I am looking at a '67 351 block. The stamp pad looks very good, with nice broach marks and characters.

    Pad info: T1003JE 7109443

If the engine was built Oct. 3, isn't 3 1/2 months a long time for this engine to have been mated with a car?

    Thanks,

    George

George, it was much more common to see those kind of lag times on the big block cars. I believe that two to three months was typical in the 67 BB's, so 3.5 mos. wouldn't be out of the question. It would be pretty questionable for a small block. Let's see what others say.

      Brandon,

I pulled out Nolan's book and found a few in the 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 month lag time.

      Awaiting more info,

      Thanks,
      G.

        George,

109748 has a build of T0119JE. Is it possible the stamp is actually T0103JE?

BB's weren't exactly low volume - they were 43% of production; four months of lag time from a finished engine at Tonawanda to St. Louis installation hardly sounds "typical".

George, VIN 9426 has an assembly date of 0113JE. I have a pic if you need it.

In what way does your information help George? The information you have suggests a mid-January engine build for a late January vehicle? Certainly that is more reasonable than a 3 1/2 month wait. My BB is a mid October Build for an early December vehicle build.

Re: '67 engine build date question

My copy of Nolan's book is a 1987 version, so maybe there is more info out there now. Is anyone compiling a survey on these '67 big block Vettes?

                Per Nolan's book: T0921IQ 7105119 ( a little over 2 months)

                T0922JA 7105210 ( a little over 2 months)

                T0929JA 7109293 ( right at 3 months)

                T0930JA 7110990 ( a little over 3 months)

I noticed that there were only 575 Corvettes built in Oct. of '66; as compared to 2200 to 3000 + in every other month of production except July of '67 (736).
                1) Why were so few cars built in Oct.?
                2) Could this be a clue as to why an engine built in early Oct. did not find a car until early Jan.? (apx. 3 1/2 months)

Would someone be willing to post photos of the pad and block?

Is there any way to find out if this car is registered?

                Thanks,
                G.

Re: '67 engine build date question

George, A better reason why the examples you note have long gestations between engine build and vehicle build are that each is a K19 vehicle (Air Injection reactors). Since the volume on those engines was so small it would make sense that a low volume engine (destined only for the California market) could get hung up on in the logistical process. Manufacturers will typically build these small volume units in batches. But with the high volume engines (like yours) that typically would not happen.

                    George,

I've tried to better understand the relationship between casting date, assembly date, and VIN number and the answers I've received could basically be summed up as "almost any combination goes."

Sorry I this is not more helpful. I have no doubt your dates are legitimate.

                      George -

The St. Louis complex was out on strike from October 4th through the 25th; that's the reason for the low production in October.

                        Thanks guys,

Any thoughts on how to find the Vette this engine "may" belong to?
