Roy Bratz--Do I need a tar top battery to have car flight judged. If so do you have and idea who sells them on the east coast. Are there any preferred ones for judging purposes.

NO! You don't need many things to top flight if the Corvette is other wise correct, you've seen mine with the wheels and still got top flight by a whisker, only if you trying to make 99.9 on the scoring sheet which I will never try to get because I drive my 55.

Re: 55 vette tar top battery
To the best of my knowledge no one makes a true tar top any longer. You night find an old unused one on ebay for $300-$500. There are several repro battery suppliers that make a poly top that replicates the tar but will receive a 30 % deduction by the knowledgable judges. There are techniques suggested to modify the poly top to make it look more like a tar topper -- pouring hot tar over the top or spraying a special undercoating on the poly plastic. However, I have heard based upon the Marlboro Regional that the judges may start to remove the caps to check if the battery is a wet cell or dry cell. The polytops come in wet or dry but the dry is more reliable, maintenance free and more popular. There was a lengthy discussion in the forum on this subject several weeks ago.

Re: 55 vette tar top battery
As others have said, you don't 'NEED' a tar top to have your car Flight Judged, but without one you'll lose some judging points. The points lost aren't significant enough to deny you any of the judging awards. It's just one more non-original item to loose points on...
Also, while tar tops WERE reproduced in substantial quantities a few years ago, those making them have either discontinued the product or gone out of business. So, it's HARD to find any form of tar top battery these days (original or repro)....
But, last summer one of our chapter members went into a 'panic' when he discovered repro tar top battery's weren't an 'off-the-shelf' item anymore and I rolled up my sleeves to help him. Doing a Google search on Delco Remy + the battery model designation, I found a 'reasonable' number of specialty car parts houses (catering to classic Chevy owners, classic Cadillac owners, Etc.) who had remaining inventory stock of the tar top batteries that were originally reproduced by firms now out of business. Bottom line, he captured a 'Last of the Mochicans' repro tar top for his car!- Top
