63 Steering Column - Turn Signal Housing

    Hello, Folks,

I have just removed and disassembled the steering column on my 63.

Can someone tell me how far down on the steering column tube the turn signal housing (mast jacket?) sits? I noticed that the tube is 'keyed' to index the housing in the proper location, but there doesn't appear to be any mechanical restriction as to how far down the housing should sit at the top of the tube.

Does the steering wheel hub have to be installed in order to make the final 'height' adjustment of the turn signal housing?

    Hope I'm making myself clear...

TIA for any assistance and support.

Kenneth, I did mine a few years ago and I don't recall being concerned about a height adjustment. What I was concerned about was ensuring that the upper assembly was seated low enough to give me a good ground for the horn assembly.

Assemble it out of the car and use an OHM meter to check for continuity when you press the horn button.

Also, the black cloth tape is 13 1/4 inches from the top of the mast jack. If you do not have a black interior the interior color paint fades to black at 12 inches from the top of the mast jack.

      Kenneth,

If my memory is correct there are metal stops on the tube that locate the installed height of the mast jacket when it is slid into place. Look closely at the tube for these tabs.

        Timothy,

Thanks for the reply. There is an indexing tab sticking out on the on the tube that corresponds with a narrow slot on the turn signal housing. However, there does not appear to be any "stop" in the slot to prevent the housing from sliding down as far as it wants to...

        Thanks again.

          Kenneth,

I think the tab does not go into the slot, turn the mast jacket slightly and the tab buts the mast jacket.

            Kenneth,

After thinking about it, I think you are correct in your first post that the metal tab indexes a slot and the mast jacket is adjusted to a dimention spelled out in the assembly manual after the hub is installed. I think that dimention is .070 to .090" which represents the distance between the hub and the mast jacket.
Sorry for the incorrect info in previous post.
