    Hi Rick:

I have the same thing, but with two flat head screws visible, as shown below.

      Rick -

I'm not sure - Mark Gorney probably knows what that is.

        Joe,
Hard to tell if there are 2 screws.

            Re: date tags

Mark..would it have been the same process for the cast iron and also aluminum transmission parts?

My George Moore / Eb Rose 54 with transplanted 57 drivetrain..has an early March all cast iron T-10 4-spd. Upon inspection under the car it almost looks like this early 4 spd actually has a tag and not a cast #. I've never had the car up on a lift or the drivetrain out of the car...to really take a difinitive look.

What does the "13" mean above the block casting number and alongside the GM casting?

                  Re: date tags

                  Joe -

Depends if the aluminum is die cast or a sand casting; the sand casting process makes a reverse copy of the part in the sand mould. The mould is filled with metal; the part solidifies, and sand breaks away creating a very rough casting. Die cast moulds are the reverse of the final part and makes a cleaner casting with less texture needing less processing.
Chevrolet Grey Iron did have a Shell Core process used for transmission cases and differential carriers. It made a hollow core that formed the inside of the part; it was hollow for lighter weight and crushed easily after casting.

Mark..do you know if the new 283 blocks were cast at your Saginaw foundry in 1956?

                            Re: blocks

Mark..the reason I ask..is according to Ken Kayser..production of the #548 283 blocks started on or about 10/18/56..unless I am mistaken.

The engine in my 57 Nassau/Daytona car..has a stamp pad of F1019EL..the next day. At minimum it is an early #548 block.

I have not looked to see the casting date on the back of the engine yet.

Was the 283 cast at both Saginaw and Tonawanda foundry's in late 56?

When we refer to Flint engines..would that normally mean small blocks cast at the Saginaw foundry?

                                Re: blocks

For those interested in the processes for producing iron castings at the Saginaw Grey Iron Foundry in the 60's, there will be a photo-illustrated feature article on that subject in the next (February '07) issue of "Corvette Enthusiast" magazine, out in a week or two.
