How Do I Remove BB Exhaust Manifold?

How do I remove the driver side exhaust manifold from my 396? I can't seem to get the manifold past the steering box. Do I need to raise the engine? Remove the exhaust manifold from the bottom? Will I have similar problems on the passenger side?

I believe that the left (driver's) side manifold needs to be removed from the bottom. The right (passenger) side is usually much easier (except with A/C which is no issue for you).

I did this exact job a couple of weeks ago, it comes out through the bottom side, although it doesn't exactly fall out, it will make it.

Stock B/B drivers drivers side drops out from the bottom. Not a bad idea at this time to remove oil filter assy. prior to dropping to play it safe and not dent up anything. As mentioned a squeeze but nothing like tubed headers especially if your doing this on your back with your car on jack stands.grr#33570

Tim --- Glad to hear they're out. Removed my 301/302's a month ago, and after swearing and trying all angles, they came out from below. Removed clutch bellcrank on driver's side, and sidepipes, beforehand.

Now, the surprise --- Just put them back on a few days ago, and they both went in from the top side, no sweat. Go figure. I did tip the back ends down until the manifold was almost vertical, so maybe that's the trick. Of course, you can always put them back in from below, but it's much easier from topside, especially when you need to install a couple of bolts to hold them to the head.
