I plan on removing the gas tank on my 69 L36 convertible to refurbish the exterior. Figured while I had it out I would take apart and clean inside too. My question is will I need the J-23346 tool referenced in the chassis service manual to remove the sending unit cam or can I remove with standard tools? If so, what would that be? If not, where can I find/buy the referenced J-23346 tool? Also, any tips on tank removal/renovation is appreciated. This is my first major project attempted and I am a little nervous - maybe I should pick something that doesn't involve explosive liquids?

Re: Gas Tank Cam Removal
Dwayne you will have all the access you will need to clean the inside of the tank and even a larger hole if you will just remove the bolts that retain the filler neck to the tank and remove the neck. Cost is one new filler neck gasket, lightly torque the bolts on the new gasket.- Top

Re: Gas Tank Cam Removal
I bought the correct tool a couple years ago from one of the suppliers of Corvette restoration parts (Paragon, Mid America, Zip, etc.). Sorry I can't remember which one. It was in their catalog and did not cost much.
My guess is that your local auto parts store may sell these as well.
In my experience, the process of removing and reinstalling the sender goes MUCH better when using this tool than when trying to do it with a hammer and drift. It is possible to damage or bend the cam when using the hammer and drift method (don't ask me how I know this...).- Top
