    A couple 283cu/230hp questions

    Car 1961 283/230:
Question #1:In the Assembly Manual the throttle return spring goes to the oil filler spout. However, my nos parts guy tells me that was for passenger cars only and it should go to a bracket on the the thermostat housing, which is right?

Questions #2:Is there a rubber hose from the tube on the exhaust manifold to the nipple on the carb air horn. My rebuilt carb (carter) does not have the nipple yet again I am told there should be one on there.

    Jeff

According to Nolandd Adams' book (page 332), the return spring was connected to a bracket on the oil filler tube in 61 and 62 until 12-19-61 or around serial number 4000 on 62 models. Then to a bracket off the thermostat housing.

As for the pipe assembly, again according to the book, there were two different designs. They changed on 10-26-61 or serial number 2000. From the describtion it sounds like both were pipes with a rubber hose over it(page 330). If you don't have a copy most libraries have them in the reference section to look at. Hope this helps

PS Nolands book is not the gospel and hopefully someone with an original 61 can support or deny what I have reported.

Terry, Thanks for taking the time to respond - sounds like I should buy Noland's book!

It is a great reference manual, but like all publications there are a few mistakes in it.

          Jeff,
According to the 61-62 Judging Manual, there is no throttle return spring tab welded to the oil filler tube. The spring is connected to a bracket on the thermostat housing.

            Rick,

You can see how these things get confusing. For every reference that says it is one way there is another reference that says it's the opposite.

Noland is absolutely incorrect on that, regarding both 61 and 62. Corvettes of those two years never had the tab on the oil fill tube--61 had a bracket on the thermostat housing. 62 is confusing because of three different brackets that were phased in/out among the three carbureted horsepower-option cars, but none of those were ever on the oil fill tube.
Already when Noland's book came out I forwarded him 2 pages of incorrect information on the 61-62 section--I now could add to that. I don't say that from an ego standpoint--Noland readily admitted/admits that he's not strong on 61-62 and relied mostly on the AIM's, which need to be greatly tempered by observation of original cars. The Judging manual is a result of that observation.
