I just took my 270hp out for its first drive after a rebuild. It tended to get pretty hot when I had to idle in traffic but when I got back and turned the car off, there was a gurgling sound coming out of the fuel tank. It sounded as if the fuel was boiling in the tank- I'm sure it wasn't but what could cause the tank to make the belching sounds? It seemed to stop when I took off the fuel cap and started again when I put it back on.Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: 61 gurgling tank
61 and 62's have a vented gas tank, hence you need a non vented gas cap. A vented cap will cause fumes and possible leakage when going around right turns. Check the archives about this. Make sure the vent line is open. When you opened the cap did it sound like pressure was being relieved?

I'll ask again, is the vent line open? Are you running stock exhaust? If not is the exhaust too close to the tank? Is it a new gas tank? Was anything done to the tank during restoration? Just trying to throw out possibilities.

Re: 61 gurgling tank
Terry, original tank, reproduction exhaust designed for a 61 that seems to fit in ok- I just haven't had a chance to check the vent. car is down at the shed, assembly manual I left at a friends, I seem to recall access to over flow is inside filler door? I should take the hose off and try a wire down the overflow? Does this condition sound dangerous? I'm afraid it will be the weekend before I can even look at it. thanks- Top

It is not an overflow as much as a vent. It starts at the fuel gauge sender and runs acrossthe tank to the filler tube. Remove inspection cover over tank and just replace the hose, they are not that expensive, then you'll know it is not that. While you are replacing hose make sure vent tube into tank is clear. Don't know how dangerous it is, but it definitly isn't the norm and I would want to find out why.
