Hello, I'm going to purchase a sand/bead blasting cabinet soon. Here's my question: for aluminum parts, i.e. intake and valve covers (1965 L79) do I need to be concerned about damaging the aluminum? Do I need to use a specific media for aluminum parts? If so, can anyone recommend one? Thanks!

Re: Media Blasting Aluminum Help
Walnut shells. You should know about walnut shells, Greg. They used to run walnut shell media through idling aircraft turbines to clean the compressor blading without damage.
Re-skinning aluminum is a tumbling process rather than a blasting process.- Top

Walnut media will remove stains. The color will be fine for me but others may say it is not original. As far as NCRS judge deductions its a crap shoot on every item judged if the finish has been messed with. If you think you have a finish perfect you just have not yet met the judge who thinks it's wrong.

Re: Media Blasting Aluminum Help
Yes Chuck I do remember hearing that was a procedure on some turbines however the type that I initialy worked on (TPE-331) series didn't call for any type of wash so I never had the chance to use them. I wouldn't have used them on my intake anyways because that was before the internet and before I knew about the NCRS so SANDBLASTING was how I "restored" my intake back then!
Sure glad I found out about you all the second time around!- Top
