      The other NOS

Depends on where it is used. On some boards (not this one) it refers to Nitrous Oxide Systems -- a brand name I believe.

In the Netherlands it used to be the "Nederlandse Omroep Stichting" (Dutch Broadcasting Foundation)

              Re: NOS?

NOS is a new old stock part. Typically an original part that is no longer produced and is new in the wrapper. For an example, someone that would have a set of original 63 wheel covers, new in the box. Those would be NOS parts. Not a dumb question at all. Welcome !

                Re: NOS?

It's an acronym for "new old stock" - a new original part. This NCRS site has a "lingo" section that explains all these acronyms and words.

I can tell you that this term now has been overused and its meaning degraded. It's now mostly used by stupid or crooked sellers on EBay to hype the part they're selling.

                        An important distinction...

is New Old Stock is a part produced by the original means, i.e., it is identical in every way to the OE part including part and casting numbers. many times parts are superseded by newer items which can function the same way but differ in appearance or i.d. numbers. This would be a NORS, New Old Replacement Stock. This has degraded in meaning over time to include aftermarket replacement parts, especially on eBay. Even with NOS parts, however, there are distinctions. For example, in the 60's and 70's Ford produced replacement sheetmetal which was primed brown.Later, in the 80's and 90's, they had switched to black primer. This is convenient, because Ford allowed the tooling to deteriorate, resulting in the black parts being considered distinctly less desirable than the brown ones. I suspect the same is true of many GM parts, with aluminum valve covers a likely example.

roy---i agree---i would rather spend 2 hours to rebuld something nobody will ever see , than spend 20 bucks on a replacement part---this is the true "sport" of this love affair of the motor vehicle

While we're on the subject, remember it's still "Buyer Beware" on e-Bay for NOS parts. Just ask yourself why this stuff is still sitting around on the shelf for 40+ years. Sometimes its because these were rejects with blemishes, flaws etc. and were picked over and left for last. So just because it's NOS dosen't make it a perfect pristine part. Always helps to know the sellers reputation.
