have a set of aluminum big block heads part # 3946074. Thought they were L-88 heads, have 2 Winters snowflakes. The casting date is aug. 29 1970, can't be L-88. They have open chambers and round exhaust ports. Only info I could find would point toward 1971 LS-6 vette. Can anyone help?

Re: aluminum head identification
Steve,
These particular heads were "over the counter" parts for the go-fast crowd.
The casting dates can't be production L-88, but they certainly could be service
dated items.
Perhaps someone else can be more specific for you. I'm not sure if the L/89
option was available for 1970....

Re: aluminum head identification
Steve------
They are L-88 heads. They just aren't L-88 heads that were part of an L-88 engine assembly originally installed in a PRODUCTION vehicle. It's possible, though, that they were installed on an early 1971 LS-6 which used the same cylinder head. Very doubtful, though, not that it really matters.
These cylinder heads, once known as GM PART #3946072 and, later, GM PART #3994025, were sold in SERVICE well into the 1980's. There were undoubtedly FAR more of them sold over-the-counter than were ever installed on engines used in PRODUCTION vehicles. They could also have originally been part of L-88 or LS-6 SERVICE engine assemblies. A lot more of those were sold in SERVICE than were ever installed in cars.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
