Travel Restrictions - how does that affect NCRS?

I just ran across this info on passports. It may be old news to some, but it seems like it will affect some more than others.

Beginning December 31, 2006, US citizens will need a valid passport to travel to and from Bermuda, Canada, Mexico, Central & South America and the Caribbean (excluding Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands). If any portion of your trip will take place after December 31, you'll need a valid passport to re-enter the U.S.

I don't see any regionals listed for Canada this year, but I'm assuming that if Americans need passports to get out and back in, then everyone else is going to need one to get in. That should be a bit rough in places like Buffalo, Detroit, and so on.

I understand Dec 31-06 does not apply

... to ground crossings, but only returning flights; all methods of entry will require passports to enter U.S. a year or 2 later.

And yes, it will cause problems for Americans, who don't usually have passports. Most Canadians who do any sort of international travel are used to presenting a passport (even at a U.S. frontier border station) because it's the most readily acceptable form of identification (the customs official scans it).

Just a small price to pay for security, IMO.

Reading about this new law recently,........

the article stated approximately 70 million United States citizens, more than 25 per cent, had passports. Not surprising with the number of American business travelers.

if it for safety of americans there should

not be a charge. someone said the cost is over $150 for 2 people. as much money the federal govt throws away they should issue everyone a free one. JMHO

Re: Travel Restrictions - how does that affect NCR

I believe that any terrorist would get in to the country despite the passport regulation if he/she so desired.

I may be jaded but this $ 150.00 cost looks like a plain old tax grab to me.

Where did the $150.00 come from?? Just renewed mine and I think it was $66.

I renewed our passports recently. Mine cost $170.00 Canadian for my wife's and my passport. The cost keeps going up and up. Wait until we can't go anywhere without them and they will go up further. They will just need more money to handle the increased paper. We can thank Osammah.

I had to get a new one some months back -- I think the cost was 125 to 150.
