      Paul -

I believe those can be found on some '64 - E66 cars; it's interchangeable with the 3858403.

        Paul------

As clem and John have mentioned, the GM #3840383 bellhousing was used on many 1964-65 passenger cars. It was also used on many 1964 Corvettes and some 1965 Corvettes. It may have been intermittantly used after 1965, too.

As John mentioned, it is 100% interchangeable with the more common GM #3858403. At least, it is for all passenger car and Corvette applications (which is the primary concern of most folks on this discussion board). For some Chevy II applications it might not work so good.

          Addendum

One other thing: I don't know if the 64 judging guide covers the bellhousing, or not. The edition of the 1965 JG that I have (second edition, first printing) states that the only bellhousing used for 1965 is the GM #3858403.

In my opinion, either the GM #3840383 OR the GM #3858403 should be considered correct for any 64 or 65. In fact, if there's any doubt in my mind, it would be whether, or not, the GM #3858403 was actually used for ANY 1964 Corvettes. It may very well be that for 1965, the GM #3858403 was widely used and was used for the vast majority of cars. However, I don't think that it's beyond the realm of possibility that the 3840383 was used on some cars, especially early 1965's.
