    paint removal

I'm getting ready to strip the paint off of my 54.What is the best choice? Do it myself with chemical stripper or send it out to get it media blasted. What does the cost of media blasting usually run?

        Re: paint removal

This has come up many times before. Search the archives for prior threads. Typically, those who do media blasting are used to working on stamped steel bodied cars and they can REALLY mess up a Corvette by raising grain, 'eating' into the fiberglass surface and oblitherating original surface details.

While it's a LOT of work, I think you'll find most prefer to hand strip their bodies chemically with Captain Lee's paint remover one of more often used systems...

I have used a plastic media blast company to remove paint. The cost was about $750. a few years ago. I would only use this on a bare body as it fills every crack and you would never get all the plastic out of the ductwork. This process eats up bondo and makes cheap repairs look ugly but they should be reglassed anyway. Where I had it done they left the black primer on the body not a 54.

I did mine about 3 months ago with captain lee's. It took a couple days but the stuff works great. And for 26 bucks a gallon and some work it's better than taking the chance of someone messing up the fiberglass.

B.J., I am sure that there is someone in your area that does soda blasting. I just saw one done and they left the factory primer. They can peel paint by layers if you should so desire. Cleanup consists of a wash down with a water hose. But like Lyle, I would only do this on a bare body.

                        Re: paint removal

Since we are on the subject:
I just looked at my freshly painted 63 SWC (after 8 months at my painter)
I am totally unhappy with the results. The paint looks "cloudy" and Dirty" in seveal areas. There are approx 30 blemishes over the entire body. (Dirt, small nicks, muddled paint etc).
There are areas on top of the car, rear and hood, where the paint looks cloudy and streaky.
I don't know what to make of it. The painter was highly recommended to me by several trustworthy individuals, who have had work done by him.
The price was reasonable, 5,000 incl. materials.( I was quoted between 5,000 all the way up to 12,000 for this job by other shops)
I was told that he was "Slow, but very good". And since i was not in a hurry, I went with him.
I was going to use PPG paint, but he suggested DuPond, and that what he used.
(I dont think the result was due to Brand, but due to expertise, or lack of)Her stated, that he will correct the "blemishes", but I dont think, its possible.
I am contemplating to have the car repainted by a different painter.
                        So here is my question:
Can the clear and some of the paint be stripped or sanded off, with out going all the way down to the primer ? I hope so, because the surfaces look very good and it apears that the priming and blocking was done correctly, its just the quality of the paint..
Sorry for the sob story, but since the subject came up, I could not resist,
                        Any suggestions ?
