    1965 sb Exhaust Fit

I am in the process of finishing my chassis before I put the body back on. Today, I installed the underbody exhaust onto my chassis. With the proper spacing of the pipes through the crossmember holes both pipes are touching the rear spring. I think they will clear the spring when the body is back onto the chassis again with all components installed. Am I correct or do I have some other problem?? I bought this exhaust system from Corvette Central about 4 years ago. Halfway through this PITA, I wished I had side exhaust. Thanks Dick Gutman

    Dick,
I would not be overly concerned about the exhaust system until you put the body back onto the chassis.

When I installed the exhaust system on my '65, I loosly assembled it and hung it under the car with hose clamps at the cross member and jack stands under the pipes near the rear shock mounts. I started with the mufflers and positioned them correctly, making sure that the exhaust tips were per the AIM through the rear valence. The AIM also gives clearance dimensions around the spring.

I adjusted my way forward and tightened the hose clamps and finally the exhaust manifold connections. When I was sure that both sides matched and were correct, I removed the hose clamps and installed the muffler type clamps. Also, remember your ground straps.

I know that I went to way more trouble than the factory did, but I wanted it perfect. I have approximately 3/4" to 1" clearance between the pipes and the spring.

Hope yours turns out great. Good luck.

    Regards,
    Gene
