    1963 early SWC

    Hi
Can anyone provide info or tips on how to correctly install stainless steel staples to secure the rubber dust shield onto the metal fan shroud. Do they fold in or to the bottom side?
    Thanks
    Stan

Stenley, I don't believe the SS staples will pass NCRS judging though. Also they are much harder to install that the regular steel ones that are readily available for a few bucks from the repro catalogs. John

            John,

Could you please provide which vendors are selling the steel ones? Every vendor I went to had the SS staples....appreciate your help... I had to use some originals that I have been holding and just had enough to get the job done, would love to have second source for these...Thanks

Collin, I thought that my restorer-Dave Cardina got the staples from Long Island. On the other hand I remember him saying that he had some on stock. Saw a judge at Marlborough though putting his favorite tool on a staple. Luckily the magnet stuck. First time around with my 63 it had SS staples. I will call one thumb-oops- Dave and ask him. He got a nickname of one thumb because he dropped my tranny on it. Luckily he didn't hurt the tranny. Thumb all better now but the trans would never be better from being slammed 5 ft to the floor. His thumb was between the concrete and the case. Ouch. John

I make my own from 16-ga. galvanized steel wire (hardware store blister-pack item) - that's what the originals were (came on 25# spools that fed the air-powered Bostitch industrial staplers).

Hi John, I heard the same answer for Jorjorian. Cut and form the steel staples from a roll. My job is done but I am sure that Collins will appreciate the answer as well as others. DOn't know why the repro boys don't have the staples made correctly. I can remember many years ago the first time my 63 was restored we used the stainless staples and they were tough to bend. Thanks, John D.

John, I dont think that the originals were regular steel wire. It would take spring steel to staple through those panels. If you try to straighten an original that sucker is strong. Those things also went through the metal shields without hole drilling. I once challenged the Boststich rep. to get me a stapler to do them since I do so many. I told him I would buy it if he showed me one that would work. After several visits with different models, he gave up. The finish looks like cold rolled or spring steel also.
