    C2:67 Another green check mark

Received this photo taken at a MAC chapter meet last spring. This 67 is only 141 earlier then mine at AO Smith, and 210 earlier by VIN.

Very similar check mark as the one on mine, and seems to be positioned under the paint code:

So the question is, is it an AO Smith thing, a paint shop thing, or some final inspection check at St. Louis? Or could it be a State registration thing.

When were the trim tags put on the car and when were they painted. Have heard from 2 others who have a similar check marks on AO Smith cars.

Would be interested in hearing from others who have green check marks, or the guys that were there.

Re: C2:67 Another green check mark

Jerry - Your posts on this subject prompted me to review the collection of '67 trim tag photos I've gathered over the years. As others have indicated, the check mark seems to appear only on AO Smith cars. I've managed to dredge up 7 additional photos of AOS tags with this mark! Couldn't find any St. Louis examples.
Curiously, all are convertibles, and all were produced during the later half of the '67 production run. Of course, more research would be required to see if these observations (especially the "convertible only" part) hold up over a larger pool of examples. If you're interested, I can e-mail these photos to you. Regards, Dave

        Gerald:

The check mark on 1967 Dow Smith trim tags is a consistently observed phenomenon for that build year. There may be exceptions, but nothing in researching trim tags has contradicted the conclusion that the check mark was applied during the manufacturing process at the Smith facility. In addition, during the research period of the 1963/1967 "Authentication Library Volume One" (And all observations since) - check marks on St. Louis trim tags have been virtually nonexistent.

A word of caution! - Using the check mark as a fundamental means of affirming tag legitimacy would be a serious error.

I'd hazard a guess that it's a body receiving inspector's mark at St. Louis, to verify that A.O. Smith body's color/trim etc. matches what was expected to be received vs. the forecast for that body number, so it's OK to schedule in the production queue for the Hard Trim Line.

OK, Okay - I was curious

Jerry, I checked my '67 trim tag for that green check mark and found no trace of one. My car, 327/300 4-speed with A/C, is SN 111648 with A-1319 body. Of course that dosn't mean that one of the 3 previous owners didn't clean it . . . but there's no trace, not even a slight miscoloring or scratch in the metal.

All of these comments regarding this check mark got my curiosity peaked. I just looked at the trim tag on my '67 roadster that I purchased about three months ago-AOS bodied with a build date of May 24 and only 49K miles-and found the green check mark beneath the paint code. Just thought I'd add my two cent's worth.

None in my small sample that are Dow Smith coupe bodies have check marks; convertibles, yes...

                            Hi Jerry:

I had a photo of my AO Smith trim tag on file, so your posting prompted me to take a closer look. Sure enough, I think I see the remnants of a green check mark in the photo below. The serial number of my car is 15586.
