    Acid testing a block

I was told there is a way of acid testing a decked block that will show what the actual numbers were. Is anyone familiar with this process ????
    Thanks

    Sorry Ric,

I've read about this here before but I have to say I seriously doubt that any such method will provide sucessful results. Especially to the hobbist at home.

Way back when, I was a criminal justice major in college. We used to bring up ground off numbers with a product called Freys Reagent. We would rub it on the ground off area with a cloth and often a shadow of the numbers would appear that was readable.

Proving that the original block was decked is probably irrelevant anyway...if the casting dates are closely grouped anywhere from eight weeks to a week before the car's build date, it's highly likely it's the original engine IMO. Finding a complete engine with the right casting dates is not easy.

Proving that the right numbers are buried down there in the cast iron molecules won't make the car worth any more...it doesn't matter if the block was inadvertantly or deliberately decked; the machine and VIN stamps are STILL GONE, and the car is still going to be devalued as a result.

here's your detective-ready 4 oz bottle of the Frys Reagent, but I don't think your pad will like it much:

                        Fry's Reagent
                        65 MM Convertible, L76 (365 hp)
