    Has anyone replated chassis hardware

I was watching The Last 67 Sting Ray when the restro shop stated they would replate 75% of the chassis hardware. Has anyone done this? What were your thoughts on the process? Lead time? Cost?

Or is it just as good to go with all new repo stuff?

Re: Has anyone replated chassis hardware

When we do restorations, we attempt to salvage every original fastener, washer, nut, screw we can. So many of the available fasteners available today are somewhat close, but deviate from the originals. Anyone can sit down with a catalog and write a check, but the top quality restorations use as many original items as possible.

Dick, when you do this do you send them out the plating shop?

            Dennis,

If you do a quick search of the archives for oxide, phosphate, plating or caswell along with Jerry Fuccillo or my name you will get a ton of info.

Dennis, I used to send them out, but recently I have purchased the necessary equipment to do my cad, oxide, phospate, and dichromate. I have a very reasonable chrome plater near by, so I did not spend the extra bucks to do any chrome.

I do not think that you can cost justify (I know that I will be flamed for that comment) purchasing the materials just to do one car. I have spent over $2,000 in equipment and chemicals. The only way that I can justify what I bought is that I am doing some work for three local restoration shops.

You do your own Cadmium and dichromate plating? Thought that they were EPA controlled and Federally regulated (extremely toxic) processes.

                            Dennis,

Like Dick, I re-use every nut and bolt possible when doing a restoration.
I use Caswell's plating system, as sending small quantities of facteners out for plating can be expensive and time-consuming. Also, not all plated hardware had the same appearance, and doing it yourself allows you to tailor the look of the parts the way you want. Very few of the repro bolts truly are the same as originals in appearance. There are many bolts that while they have the same head mark, the mark does not really like the original.

                            Regards, John McGraw
