    Tachometer Pbm - C3

My tachometer on my '69 L36 died. I checked the cable and it is fine so the problem is obviously in the distributer. I understand that there are a couple gears that are the culprit. Any advice on how difficult this is to rebuild?

I'm getting reading to tackle the same issue myself.

It's a matter of un-threading the brass/bronze coupling and replacing the button, cross shaft, thrust washer, packing it with lube and re-installing the coupling.

Now I'll assume that IF your cross shaft is spent, then your going to have debris floating around the cavity that will require an extensive cleaning and inspection of the main shaft gear for damage as well.

Then of course you should check the upper and lower main shaft bushings for side to side looseness because if there is any at all, then you would be money in to go after them as well since you have it out of the engine and partially apart anyway.

All parts can be had from all the usual after market suppliers, plus there's always the send it out and have it re-built bunch as well.

Thanks for the info Chuck. Sounds like it might be a bit beyond my humble skill level. Anybody you would recommend sending it out to have it rebuilt?

            Re: Nope

I'll be doing my own work but I'm sure that others will chirp in with resourses.

By the way, it just might be that the tach it'self has failed. Have you spun the tach shaft to see if it works?

            Just a thought.

            Regards,

            Chuck

Rob and Chuck. From experience that I have had with the distributors, you might as well get a shaft also. Usually if you strip the cross shaft, the main shaft is pretty well used up also. Be sure to shim the main shaft to reduce the vertical play. I have seen over .100". Shim the cross shaft to reduce the end play also. With a little luck this will last you many years.

Re: Thanks for the heads up Dick

Mine's in great shape, I just inherited the danged thing this way with the the whole danged cross shaft assembly M.I.A.

I'm still going to pull the whole assembly apart anyway to clean up and re-lube all the critical components and probably along with the cross shaft parts buy an advance re-build kit too.
