    Rob,

I believe that you are referring to the red plastic plug that goes over the grease fitting.

Actually, I think you will find the OEM clutch cross shaft plugs were orange not red. Pete

agree with pete. originals i've had were more along the lines of chevy engine orange, rather than bright red as the repos are. perhaps the originals, when born, were red and oxidation/heat etc converted them to orange. mike

Anyone have any idea how many of these plastic plugs survived the dealer's pre-delivery inspection and prep? Do Bowtie cars typically still have these plastic plugs in place?

Peter, I starting reading this post and I said oh oh the key guy gonna jump on this one. Then I scrolled down and saw that you indeed verify that the orange plug is the one to go with. By the way CC liked the orange plug at Marlborough. I told him it was a gift from you. If you run out I have an extra in my ash tray. Heard the plug was actually red though. John

Chuck - My estimate is close to 100 percent. It wasn't an item that got addressed in the dealer's pre-delivery inspection. Check the Owner's Manual and you'll find the clutch cross-shaft plug was to be removed at 36,000 miles, a lubrication fitting installed and lubricated with water resistant EP Chassis Lubricant which meets GM Specification 6013M.

Don't know about Bowtie cars but many uncared for standard transmission 1964 and up Corvettes, Nova, Camaros, and Chevelles have them in place. Pete

John - RED PLUG!!!!!!!!!!!!! I heard that "real" 1963 Corvettes came with a Zerk fitting in the clutch cross shaft. I'm confused as to why yours has the plug in the ash tray?????????????? Oh, the FI hi-performance option, I'm sure..................... Hee, heee. Pete

Mike - You're correct in the the heat did affect the color of the plastic clutch cross shaft plug. You'll find that the outer exposed portions of the orange plugs turned more yellow, but the portion that was in the hole of the clutch cross shaft still retains the orange color. Pete

Hi Pete, I see you are not hard working cutting some good keys this PM. Yeh you rite. The plug is orange. At the 11th hour at Marlborough and in the rain of course we removed the jerk fitting with crude tools and installed one of your best orange plugs. I tell you CC really liked it. Put his little pawls on it and smiled big time soon as the wet hood was open when the car was indoors. Wouldn't you know first time out after fresh resto and it rains. At least no water got inside. By the way my spare orange plug is in the ashtray of the GMC not the 63. Never know when I am going to need it to plug a nail hole in a tire. Good nite, John

Re: C3 (72) Cluch cross shaft plug

Thanks, Pete. I had a 66 Impala with the Saginaw three speed...I can't remember a fitting or a plug in the cross shaft, and I've always been fairly committed to maintenance. I suppose if it had a plastic plug, it was still there when the car went to the junk yard...pretty sure that's it's final resting place by now.

What's the joke between you and John?...Are you repro'ing the plug in the correct color?
