Mystery hole in '67 firewall ???

The hole shown below was drilled into the bottom of the fresh air vent well on the passenger's side of my '67 SB. What it's purpose is I still don't know. I'm getting ready to blackout the firewall and have looked at every Corvette book I have, every vendor catalog, the '67 Assembly Instruction Manual, the '67 Judging Manual and can find nothing on what this hole is for.

Does anyone have a hole like it or want to take a guess? Otherwise I'm going to have to glass it in, which should be easy, but I want to do it before the blackout. Thanks for any clues. PT

      Patrick,

No hole in my 67 June base engine convertible. Same number under 3873785.

Nice looking hood latch, is it new?

PT, did Bubba, the former owner, drill the hole as a drain hole from the wiper well? This may be the reason if the area next to the fender was filled with leaves and junk.

          Hi Patrick:

There is no hole like that in my 67 SB with A/C. I note that the location is about where the wiring harness splits out some wires to go down the firewall to the starter. Maybe the hole was related to a starter cutout switch of some sort.

I agree with Jerry, nice looking hood latch. When you go to apply the blackout paint, keep in mind that if your car is an AO Smith car, there should be no blackout overspray on the hood latches or crossover cable (both installed after blackout), whereas St. Louis installed the hood latches before blackout and they did get overspray.

            Jerry,
Is the number 3873785 on your firewall? I seem to remember seeing a number on my firewall but I am not near my car to check.

              Affirmative

              Rick,

You can just about see the numbers in Patrick's photo, just below the mystery hole.

                Thanks guys...

I guess it's unanimous, I'll plug the hole tomorrow. The hood latch is not new, but not original. It did clean up nicely though with some fine steel wool and I put a thin coat of assembly lube with molybendum on it.

This car is a July '67 St. Louis car, so I'll leave the latches on and install the hood release cable before blackout. Maybe the hole was drilled because of leaves or maybe a previous owner had mounted a mouse trap there! PT

Fill in the Mystery hole in '67 firewall

                      Patrick,

My February 14 A.O. Smith '67 327/300 A/C car is without the hole. My '89 L-71 has mercury switches on both sides in the same areas as part of an owner inspired alarm system. Perhaps a previous owner installed some theft deterrent system requiring that hole.

I have a hole in almost that same exact location on my '64, but I put it there to install an external electric tach when I used to race. Chances are that may have been what a previous owner did to yours too. The RH vent location is a great place to put an external tach as it can be viewed right between the 2 humps in the dash pad.
