A Day That Will Live in Infamy!

God bless the souls of those 2388 Americans who lost their lives in the early hours of the morning, 65 years ago today, in Pearl Harbor. We are fast approaching a new era in America. An era where there will be no more survivors of the greatest cataclysm of modern times, who will remain alive to tell the tale. It makes me sad, but also proud to know that my parents were part of The Greatest Generation.

You're right Clem. It's sad what it takes sometimes before people wake up to reality but by then it could be to late.

Re: i remeber pearl harbor because my dad was

          Clem,

I am younger than you are, and have no direct recollection of the War. My dad was a sailor, and served aboard the USS Hornet (CV12) in the last half of the Pacific War. The first (aircraft carrier) Hornet (CV8), the platform for Dolittle's raids on Japan, was sunk in late 1942 during the Battle of Santa Cruz Island. WW II marked the beginning of the USA as a major world power, the end of the battleships as a viable war machine, and many, many other earth shattering firsts, such as the atomic bomb.
Walter Winchell was a famed war correspondent. He, and Edward R. Murrow were the power brokers who held sway with the "powers-that-be" of post WWII America. Both of their voices are immortal.
One of the most noteworthy things about Winchell, was that he "held court" at New York's famous Stork Club during the 1930's and 1940'. He was also the distinctive voice of "The Untouchables". To his detriment, he was a supporter of the paranoid/sociopath Senator Joe McCarthy in the early fifties.
To Morrow's credit, he was instrumental in bringing down the psychopath, McCarthy.
I digress.........sorry that this is not Corvette related. We should all remember our parents, because that generation is almost gone!

Perspective: WWII and what it meant

to one family. I chased down the Army history of the father of a high school classmate. Funny, but in dealing with veteran organizations, I never ran into the privacy issue. The perspective is that his dad was drafted in 1943 at age 33, with THREE kids; he arrived in Europe in time to be in the second wave at Normandy, was part of the Battle of the Bulge, saw V-E day and was en route to the Phillipines staging area in 1945 to begin training for the Invasion of Japan when the war ended. He rarely talked about those three years.
They may, indeed, have been the "Greatest Generation".

Huh??? I don't remember a "liberal" take on 9-11, as opposed to a "conservative" one. I believe all Americans felt the same way that day and afterwards.

It was very clear, though, that there was a conservative opinion about our involvement in WW2. That lasted until December 7, 1941. Don't hear about that much anymore.

                      Clem,

I lived in the Middle East for six years. I worked with men from a number of different countries. Most people over there are like most of us, just living their lives. But, a significant minority want nothing less than to convert the world to Islam and kill those who will not submit. The rest, for whatever reason, do not resist or object so the terrorists run free. We can fight them over there or we will surely fight them here. They demonstrated on 9/11 they can strike here.

                      It will happen again.

My ol man was 22, In the Air Force. Was called back to Long Beach from Pearl last wk of Nov 41. He lost lota friends that day. Later he was assigned with the 15th Air force Bari, Italy from 42 till the end. Flying the Liberator B-24's. Running bombing raids on bearing factories in Germany and the oil fields of No. Africa. Got married after the war my brother and I showed up in the early 50's. The'yre all gone now. But without The Greatest Generation, none of us would be here today. Lets hope we remember 9/11 as well or were doomed to repeat it.

Yeah, for a year or so...and then the media and politicians started whining about it being Vietnam all over again, and the volume of the howl has been increasing from political opportunists every since. It's not the parents and spouses of the kids killed in Iraq that are complaining the loudest.

The Republicans were complacent and negligent and the voters "made a change". Now that the Democrats are in power, they had better lead, because full-time criticism by two-a-week photo ops will no longer be tolerated by the voters.

The Libs have other plans for the military...they want us to go to Darfar and stop the killing there; Iraqis-OK, Africans-No. I say we let others take care of themselves, and we take care of ourselves. Any country allowing a terrorist training camp to be built, we're going to take it out and leave the ruins; and, if you mess with us, we are going to take YOU out. You think you are going to screw with us with a single nuclear weapon you finally manage to cobble together?? We invented nuclear weapons when you were still riding camels, and we still have a couple of thousand left to "take care of business"...Mess with us and your homeland will be a barren, glowing, molten glass plain.

A long war can no longer be waged by this country (about three years maximum)...We are a fat, rich, affluent society that is decaying away morally. Our greatest citizens are the young people that serve in our armed services. The Greatest Generation came out of the Great Depression...they were forged in privation, sacrifice, and suffering. Patriotism was still easy for them. The military was the first opportunity many of them had for three squares a day. Now we worry about luxury cars, bigger new homes, the latest cell phone/GPS/MP3 gadgets, etc.

Every time I think about what The Greatest Generation corporately did for us, and literally for the entire world, I get a lump in my throat and a misty-eyed respect and reverence...May God Bless Them All.
