    '67 radiator support brace screw...

This item seems to be MIA in the NCRS Judging Manual, but it is clearly shown in the AIM. Should this black phosphate screw just to the right of the bumper brace be painted body color as shown or left as black phosphate? Thanks, PT

            Patrick,

Body color, but a phillips rounded head. Found that the current hardware store Stainless Steel phillips heads, match the original heads the best, at least better then current plated phillips bolts of the same size.

I would keep the screw you have. I would bet dollars to donuts it is original. It is identical to what you would find on a 68 corvette. It appears as a recessed head (probably would have RBW enbossed on it) and it has a captured washer. It was propably an interchangeable substitute or a production change towards the end of production. If you need another, let me know and I will send you one. Terry

                  Terry -

That screw was always a round-head phillips on 67's as shown in the photo Pat Hulst posted; '68-up were different.

Interesting. I don't know 67 corvette but I recognize the bolt. Very common bolt for 68. It was used on the front and rear valence panel in several locations. Had at least two different head markings. Terry

Does anyone have an extra cross head screw for a 67? I have one cross head and one slotted head. It must have been lost at the painters in the 80's. I did find my 1972 NM license plate. Dale

If this screw was painted with the body, does this mean the radiator support was bolted to the body before it was mated to the chassis?

                        Just curious.

                            Randy,

The core support was one of the items that was assembled along with the front end fiberglass. It was the main structure of the assembly. The complete nose, with core support attached, was then bonded to the cowl of the body.

This is why you usually see areas of primer, body color and finally, blackout on the sides of the already black core support after the body has been painted. The screws at the lower location would have received both primer and body color.

                              Dale,

Take your cross-hesd screw to the hardware store and look in the stainless steel bolt section. I think you will find a fairly good match.
