My rebuilt T-10 hops out of 2nd when backing down and will not let me down shift into second unless I rev the engine prior to shifting down. It shifts fine going up thru the gears. I think the linkage is adjusted right because I used the neutral block.I'm afraid there is something not right with the secound gear synchros. A friend said a lighter or multi viscousity trany oil my fix the problem, but the hoping out of gear makes me think the trany has to come back out again. Any suggestions that might save me bouncing the trany off my chest again? Thanks

Re: BW T-10
I believe this is pretty common with that tranny. I know mine used to do it before it was rebuilt and the rebuilder did something to keep it from happening. But he did say it might still occur and we might have to repull it out and do something.
Too long ago for me to remember what it was though.- Top

Re: BW T-10
Richard, my 62 t-10 did the same thing as well as leak oil and had problems shifting into other gears. A complete rebuild including 3rd gear, synchros, front bearing, cover plate and forks among other things. It was an expensive job but it shifts crisp and holds in every gear and I haven't had a problem with it for 4+ years.- Top

Re: BW T-10
Richard,
I agree with Mike. It probably needs to come out. A few things can cause that. On decel the pitch of the gears trys to move 2nd gear forward, away from the slider ring on the clutch assy. "Usually" the problem is worn edges on the slider ring teeth which allows them to slip off of the engagement teeth on the gear itself. It could also be the teeth on the gear that are worn (less likely) OR it could just be a badly worn fork which can't hold the slider in close position on the gear. You might be able to pull the side cover with the trans in the car and check the fork. Replace it if it's worn, and if you're lucky that just might do it.
A lot of people tend to hold hand pressure back on the shifter while it's in 2nd gear, before upshifting to 3rd. That's what wears out that fork.

Re: The "Torque Lock Slider" is the sure cure...
As already mentioned, for a tranny that ocassionally jumps out of gear upon decelerating, the Tork Loc (I believe this is the correct spelling) syncro sliders is usually a permanent fix. They are available for both T-10, Super T-10 and Muncie trannys. When I build 4spds for customers (or myself), if the sliders and/or engagement teeth of the gears are in question, they always get the Tork Loc sliders. I have NEVER seen or heard of a recurring problem once the sliders are replaced with Tork Locs.
If a tranny does not want to downshift easily, it is usually an indication of a bad or excessively worn brass syncro ring.- Top
