Re: Sellers who grossly overcharge for shipping...

Jerry, Just wondering who your favorite shipper is now. I see that my shipper raised the rates again. It is getting so I cannot guess at the shipping charges anymore as I come up short. Can't believe how expensive it's getting to ship even a small pak with the big name shippers. You can hardly ship a 1# package anymore for 6 bucks. Course it depends on the zone.
I bought a new sweeper on ebay cheep. But the shipping was as high as shipping one of our fuel injections. So high that the bargain was not really a bargain at all. Could have bought it locally, paid the sales tax, and come out ahead. We should all watch the shipping charges as it is out of control and outright dishonest. Did you ever get your lost spring? John

      Re: Shipping Charges

Not EBay but I had a similar experience last week. I have been looking for American Optical General aviator sunglasses. I came across a pair at an on-line store for $52.16. That sounded fine to me. At the electronic checkout the shipping was calculated as $18.10!! That's from Ohio to Ontario, Canada. I declined the offer.

        Nah

I think the spring is gone forever. I can't even guess what happened to it.

I'm still using FedEx Ground. The spring incident was a disappointment, but FedEx will need a string of such disasters to equal the record of UPS for overcharging and damaging stuff.

          Good idea, Tim

I think that's the right way to do it. Most bidders just don't want to overpay. They don't need to know exactly how much shipping will cost before they will bid, they only want to know that they won't be overcharged.

            How much is enough?

The "winner" of an eBay auction has already agreed to pay more than anyone else in the world for that particular item on that particular day. And that's still not enough for some sellers, so they goose the shipping charges to add "handling costs".

Give me a break! That's just all-consuming greed.

What's next... a surcharge to pay for their time to post the auction? What about pay for their time to answer questions and take photos? We certainly can't have a seller spending a nano-second of his day without ample compensation. Where is the UAW when you need them? Unfair! Unfair!

              Re: Shipping Charges

              Rick,
I'm suprised and disappointed you didn't check over at the shop for the correct drain plug. No shipping involved, just handling. Based on the compensation rate of the office staff/parts picker, you should get away with no more than $30.00 for handling. Let's do the math: $30.00 handling, and $70.00 for a drain plug from the owners "private stash"......face to face experience buying a rare part for your vette...........priceless.

Re: Shipping Charges rule of thumb

Before I bid on anything, I calculate the shipping cost and factor that into my final bid price. Then, I post my max bid. If I win it, great,if not,oh well. If I lose the item in bid, then I buy it from one of our friendly vendors who charge reasonable shipping.

                Mike

PS, Mary Jo Rohner does charge on actual shipping amount and recycles packaging to save cost and environment. I may wait a day or two longer to see final price, but her shipping is not a profit center.

Re: Beware of actual shipping charge

The best way is for the seller to post the total charge up front and base your bidding on the total you are willing to pay for the part. Beware of actual shipping charge as I was charged what it cost but the seller just droped the part off at the pack and ship UPS station and charged what he had to pay them and it is a real rip off. Shipping was more than the part cost but it was actual shipping cost ups charged.

                    Re: Shipping Charges

Great comments by all but I am still having a hard time understanding how someone can justify shipping, handling, time and packing costs of $8.00 and $6.50 for one bolt. Thats is out and out gouging.

                        NOT GUILTY NOT GUILTY

Rick I have the two auctions for the drain plugs on ebay your talking about , I only ship UPS and live in Oregon about as far away from most as you can get, UPS charges start at one pound, I only ship UPS, To ship a drain plug it cost around $6.00 - $8.50 most people who buy from me buy more then one item and combine shipping, I do use new boxes and dont charge handling fees......I buy alot on ebay and dont like it when sellers wont combine shipping fees and then they put all your parts in the same box...........Check the rates with UPS and see what they charge before you complain.....Thanks for looking at the oil drain plugs in my auctions, The crazy thing about all of this is the prices paid for the oil drain plugs bolts etc, ITS NOT OUT AND OUT GOUGING MERRY CHRISTMAS John Meissinger

Re: Save shipping money take a trip to Carlisle

Shipping is cheap compared to going to Carlisle. Four days at Carlisle can cost $1000. real easy plus the parts.

How much would charge to ship the oil drain plug ($6.50)and the air cleaner wing nut ($8.00) if they were combined shipping?

                              Re: Shipping Charges

This over charging for shipping charges is a chronic problem lately. Sellers have discovered a new revenue source by charging double and sometimes triple the shipping charges at the seller's expense. When the seller does a volume business this adds up. Unfortunately, when you need a rare part you have to anti-up. I agree, the seller should state the shipping charges ahead of time. Why can't a simple bolt be mailed in a padded envolope for about $1.50?

Shippers like John are in the parts "business" most others on eBay are hobbiest. They can chose the easiest way to ship there auctions. It's the old, ship it my way or take the highway attitude, even if the part could ship for $2.50 using another method. I don't think we're talking about guys like John he charges what it costs him to conveniently ship his auctions his way. I make mistakes on shipping my auctions relying on calculators that don't reflect the real world, hopefully each time I've made enough on the deal I eat the few extra dollars myself.
