    Mike,

    I just looked at the list of misc items that were to be shipped in the car. The list includes "screw & L/W assy", part number 9419107 and a quantity of four, as Robert suggested. The screws were to be placed in a bag, part number 458526, and placed in luggage compt area. If I remember correctly, they were about 1" in length.

    I know they're real as I have a few of these, somewhere. No idea what the "bag" is supposed to be though. I've heard that the scoops were placed in a large canvas bag, same as C1, but the few original scoops that I know about were shipped loose, no bag. Could be just the screws were supposed to be in a bag?

        are the backing plate covers painted a semi-gloss black? trying to get the "LADY" ready for your eyes in Charlotte! (VBG)

            Rick,

            Yes, the covers, as well as the bolts that retain them, would have been coated at the same time the entire front knuckle/spindle assy, backing plate and drum was coated. The covers had to be in place to prevent paint from entering the inside of the drum, the brake shoe area.

              Michael,

              okay - looks like I pull out the black can tomorrow and paint - they are currently bare metal after I had them dipped in 2004 - then will get them put on for Charlotte - plan on having the "ears" in the burlap bag

                I absolutely agree Michael. Z-11s had their own sprecial linings, with no cross-over to any other Pass car or Corvette. (or truck). No finned drums and no fans.
                I have to wonder if the only point of the vented backing plates was in line with weight reduction. Even with the covers, I think the heavy weight metal of a standard backing plate was a lot more weight (on a focused measure) than the vented assy. And who knows about those mysterious shoes? Maybe they had half the sintered iron segments? I've never seen a known original.

                  Funny, that brings back memories of a strange NHRA rule from the 60's that described what was legal for backing plates. It read something like... "holes to lighten backing plates are not allowed. Holes for cooling are allowed". We always laughed when going through tech and the inspector, who we knew well, asked if those were lightning holes or cooling holes in those backing plates.

                  Anyway, I suspect the vented backing plates were mostly for cooling, especially at some short drag strips. I know every effort was made to loose pounds off the nose of those old Chevys but the four pieces of metal removed wouldn't amount to much, although every pound counts I suppose. I guess if you want to loose a pound, that's an excellent place to do it. Double benefit.

                  Lot of interesting aluminum pieces in the nose of those cars. More than just the fenders, bumpers and hood. Even the hood lock support was AL. Somewhere I have the complete parts list of unique pieces that made up a Z11 car.
