Re: Paint chart by model year 53 to 73
That dupont number for 70 donnybrook is strange.
I have had this dupont donnybrook green sample for a long time. 4X6.The color won't show very well, but you get the idea of size.I compared it to a known original car at Carlisle and its dead on.

The color mix for Donnybrook Green shown in the old chart I posted is the same as shown in the original NCRS spec guide chart. Not to say ..there aren't other additional offsets.
The old chart does not show sportsman red for 54 which is at least one omission..but..I think the relative importance of the chart..is the color offsets by brand of paint.
It gives a clue to your paint shop..on how to find..todays available offsets...from history.

I agree the info for different supplier codes are a good go to for a painter. I seem to recall a code 44 for donnybrook green as well.
What is the original NCRS spec guide chart? I would think the original manufacturer color codes would be a better source for a paint shop.- Top

I think that you will find that most offsets are not correct either in tint, shading, or metalics. Your best bet is to find an original paint component of the car, take it to your local paint jobber and let him scan it. Work from there. Maroons, blues, and greens plus anything with metalics are usually far from what the originalsDick Whittington- Top

NCRS Specifications Guide
I am referring to the special membership edition 1953-1972 NCRS Corvette Specifications Guide..that came out in Summer 1989. It is now available through the NCRS store. I don't know what corrections if any or additions if any have been made over these years..but it is a very handy referance tool to have.
It is testimony to Bill Clupper NCRS president at that time..and the devoted work and contribution of others.
Job well done..Bill

Re: Paint chart by model year 53 to 73
I have seen many variations of Marlboro Maroon but in the early 1980's, my '67 was done with R-M factory pack lacquer and the color was dead on. In the late 1990's when it was re-done, PPG Duracryl was used and it was disappointly not the same.- Top

Re: Paint chart by model year 53 to 73
I used R-M factory pack on an original paint Marlboro maroon 67 I had that needed a small spot repainted. Never even came close. Looked ok in the shop but much different out in the sun. Painted about 25 small test panels with different air pressure, different thinner and different color primer but still never looked near the same outside. I suppose an entire car repait would be ok because there would be no original color to compare it to. Milano Maroon was another that was near impossible to match. Factory pack from all three major suppliers wasn't even close.- Top

Re: Hence my dupont sample plate

The color standard plate supplied by DuPont in your post was indeed the "master" we used in the plants. In the old Fisher Body/Chevrolet assembly plants, they were the "bible" for color match arguments (in those days Fisher painted the body from the firewall back and Chevrolet painted everything from the firewall forward). Color/gloss match issues became apparent on the Final Line after body drop, when the Chevrolet front sheet metal was installed, and a regular entertainment feature for the workforce was the daily animated argument between the Fisher and Chevrolet Paint Superintendents or Chief Inspectors (and sometimes the Plant Managers) on the Final Line over paint color/shade/gloss mismatches, with each of them waving their DuPont color standard plates and calling each other color-blind (among other things ).
At Lordstown, the Chevrolet Chief Inspector WAS color-blind (which he kept secret), and he always brought one of his engineers with him to color arguments to quietly "coach" him as he hollered at the Fisher Body Chief Inspector.
Lotsa fun back in the old Fisher/Chevrolet days.

Re: Paint chart by model year 53 to 73
By the late '90's the old mixing colors of the '60's were pretty much history. Concerns over VOC's, lead, etc had changed the picture. None of the mixing formulas were any good, everything had to be painted with an off set color. Some were close, some were not even in the same color family. The best thing going today is if you can get an original paint panel and have it scanned. Usually they can get you very close. If any tinting is needed they can handle it also. This is, if you have a jobber that is willing to take the time to work with you..Dick Whittington- Top
