license lamp plating?

Thanks eric for taking it all apart.

It is gold under the lens with the silver on the backside that is inside the trunk. I have copied the pictures so I can simulate the blackout procedure.

Can anybody who knows plating say if this is possible? Could one side be plated cad silver and the other gold? Could the gold color "go away" with time? Any other possibilities?

Chris,

The housing would have been zinc plated and then dipped in the dichromate solution. The dichromate solution changes the finish to iridescent gold. Since the part is dipped, the entire part would have the same zinc dichromate (gold) finish. Once plated and dipped in dichromate, the part would then have been painted.

Sounds correct but how did the backside remain silver plated, while the inside remained gold?
