    66 horns

Well, I finally am getting around to rebuilding my original 66 horns with the kit that I bought two years ago. I will be pulling the salvage yard donor horns and re-installing my rebuilt units.

This is where it gets a little sticky. When I pulled them out I took them apart and cleaned up the cases. However, I failed to mark or note the orientation of the the horn to the mounting bracket. (I know, I know!) Will one of you with a good original set of horns go out to your 66 and tell me how the actual horn is mounted in relation to the bracket? The Judging Manual states that the 487 left horn and the 488 right horn both face in. That is easy enough but the opening could be perpendicular, slightly down, or vertical. I think I remember that the opening of the left horn is at the 5 o'clock position and the right horn is at the 7 o'clock position. Is this correct?

Any other hints would be helpful. I do have the Restorer articles and will using those as well as the instruction.

    Thanks, Gary

    Re: 66 horns

Gary, I hope you have better luck that I did rebuilding your horns. I've done two. Neither one works correctly. Instead of the nice horn sound, they buzzzzzzzzz. My friend rebuilt his and it buzzzzzzes also. Do not FINAL assemble with the rivits until you test it and they work! Use nuts and bolts first, test, then remove each bolt, one at a time and put in your rivit etc.The recent article in the Driveline about rebuild doesn't make sense for the adjustment screw (I think he told it backwards). Gary:

I have just rebuilt the horns for my '65; I believe they are the same.If you hold the 487 horn with the bracket at 6 o'clock, and facing you, the opening will be at approx. 4:30 o'clock. If you hold the 488 horn the same way, the opening will be at approx. 7:30 o'clock. I hope this helps. Good luck.

The recent Restorer article does suggest using nuts and bolts to hold it all together, nice and tightly, while you tune the sound. Thanks. Wish me luck.

          Re: 66 horns

Thanks Joe. This was about what I thought it should have been. Just to clarify though. "If you hold the 487 horn with the bracket at 6 o'clock, and facing you, the opening will be at approx. 4:30 o'clock. If you hold the 488 horn the same way, the opening will be at approx. 7:30 o'clock." What you are saying is that the horn is facing away from you and you are looking at the back of the horn? Thanks for the input and wish me luck. I will be testing them probably Monday. Gary

            Gary:

That is correct. You are looking at the bracket, which is mounted on the back side of the horn.
