    69 torque converter ID

Is there any way to positively identify a 69 THM 400 torque converter?

Years ago I installed a high stall(big mistake) but saved the original one. I kept it in storage with another stock converter but now I can't remember which is which. The other one was probably from a late 60's GTO or FireBird THM 400 or possibly Olds. Pretty sure that it is a 400 and not a 350 converter though.

Any idea on how to tell which is which....or does it really matter?

there is a 4 digit code sticker on the convertor

take that to a trasmission shop and they should be able to tell you what it means.

Thanks Clem but there is no longer a sticker on the converter.

Any other ways to tell them apart?

The in-put gear teeth of the trans match's the TC inside teeth , try fitting TC each in to the trans.

Thanks Roy. My 400 input shaft fits perfectly into the torque converter that I think is my original one so I now know for sure that it is 400 converter.

I wonder how you would tell if it is MY original one or if it was from another THM 400? I'm pretty sure that it is mine...it would just be nice if there was some easy way to tell for sure...

LOL thanks Roy! Well 16 years ago I figured that the mark that I put on it was good enough but obviously it wasn't! I'm just glad that you and others could help me sort it out. FYI I also remembered that the 400 torque converter also has a larger diameter bolt circle than the 350 does where it bolts to the flex plate.

I know I haven't replied to many if any of your postings because to be honest I don't know much about the 55's but I will say that I'm glad you chose to stay on the forum! I just love seeing and reading about all those neat accessories that you come up with.

              Have a Merry Christmas.

              Greg
