Intake shield and rivets on L79

Im bead-blasting my L79 aluminum intake manifold, should I remove the shield on the underside and clean underneath it too? Or should I just stick it back on? If so, what is the best way to remove the rivets and re-install new ones?

I had my intakes cleaned on my L71 and L36 (One Aluminum, and one Steel). I left the shields in place, and the results were great.

    Cheers,

I haven't done it myself but have read other posts that you have to make sure all the media is thoroughly removed. I also seem to recall that some prefer to remove the shield just to make sure that all the media is removed. I would suggest searching the archives.

        Jeff,

You MUST remove the shield to be sure that no media remains!! Reattach with self tapping machine screws, and red Loctite. New splined fasteners can be purchased, but I prefer the machine screws.

Self tapping screws tend to strip in blind holes

          if you're not really careful.

It's simple to just tap the holes for a small screw. I don't remember the size I used. You should still use the loctite.

Or use the rivets still available from Chevrolet, part number 10229247

Yes, remove the shield. Typically, there will be some junk lef on the inside. I would use the original style rivets or the same rivets if you can get them out without destroying them. You can re-insert them with red lock tight and it will never budge. Your choice though. Best regards, Terry

You can very often slip a thin blade under the shied and pry on it and get the rivet to move. Then, carefully grab it and slowly twist it out. Terry
