    c2 speedometer problems

The speedometer on my '67 recently stopped working. Prior to that time the speedometer would occasionally make noise and sometimes jump eratically. I initially suspected it was the cable but it looked fine upon inspection. My question is.... what else could have broke and does the entire dash cluster need to be removed to fix it? Thanks for any input.

    John,

Been through that on my 67.

Check your distributor gear. If it is bunged up, you also need to check the gear on the distributor shaft. If you are lucky, the gear on the shaft is OK. But more then likely, if one is bunged, the other is.

    Is it your original distibutor?

If both the gear and the shaft gear are OK, then you need to check the speedometer end. You can actually test the speedometer on the car with a drill on the cable.

Sorry John, was thinking about the tach.

But you could still test the speedo with a drill on the cable.

        John,

Yes, it looks like the dash cluster will have to come out and the assembly sent out for repair. There is a rotating magnet just inside the speedometer and it's housing is wore where it spins. This magnet shaft drives a worm gear and because of wear in the housing that holds the magnet, the gears are not aligned correctly. Sometimes the gears will catch and you will see the neddle jump and skip but the movement is not smooth.

The tach has the same magnet and housing except no worm gears because it does not have to drive the odometer, but if one is wore the other is also because the tach spins all the time. As stated in Jerry's post, a good place to start with the tach is in the distributor. There is good information in the archives about distributor and tach gear repair. It's not that bad of a job to remove the cluster, just make sure you unhook the battery. If the clock has never been out it's a good time to have it cleaned and restored so all will match the same.
