I am almost ready to paint my 64. A friend of mine told me that when he paints Corvettes he adds a little flex agent to the clear to compensate for body flex in these cars. Has anybody ever tried this.

Re: Flex agent in overall clearcoat
I haven't tried it, and I doubt that I will. Flex agent may do no harm, but unless it's necessary, why add another expensive component to the stew?
When painting flexible parts, PPG recommends you minimize film build (adhesion promoter, one coat epoxy primer, two coats color, one coat clear), and to add a flex agent to BOTH the base coat and the clear coat. I doubt your friend gets much more flexibility by adding flex agent only to the final clear coat(s).
Given the number of these old cars that have been restored and painted, I'm thinking that cracking is the exception rather than the rule, and may be due to other influencing factors such as too much total film build.- Top
