    1968-1969 exhaust tip question

I have some NOS exhaust tips, some with 2 slot and some with 4 slots, that is on the rear where it slips on the muffler. Were these 2 different companies making these or did one year take a 4 slot and another take a 2 slot. Thanks for any help. john

    John-----

The 1968 and 1969 extensions were different. However, to what degree and just how they were different, I do not know. I wish I did. I do not think, though, that the number of "slits" was different; I think that both had "2 slits". Anyway, the 68-only extensions were GM #3921607. The 69-only extensions were GM #3952742. The 3921607 was discontinued in January, 1970 and replaced by the 3952742 for SERVICE.

In February 1980 the GM #3952742 was discontinued and replaced by GM #496346. Another earlier part number, GM #550730, was also discontinued and became the GM #496346 for SERVICE. However, the GM #550730 and the 496346 were never originally used on Corvettes or, even, any Chevrolet product. They were originally used on some Pontiac and Oldsmobile models. I don't know which ones, though. I think that it's the 550730 and/or the 496346 which have the 4 "slits", although I'm not sure of this.

If the parts you have would shed any light on this mystery, I'd be interested in seeing photos of them.

      Hi Joe and John
Factory 68 and 69 tail pipes have 2 slits. Any 4 slits is over the counter GM parts. I have a set of early NOS 2 slits tail pipes but packed in the round paper. It fits over the pipes like a glove. Most tail pipes you get in a box from GM is the later NOS versions. Now here is the kicker. There is a 68 only tail pipe and a 69 pipe. Some people mix and match. 68 tail pipe is different from a 69. Merry Xmas to all. Grant
