    63-64 Judging Guide Questions

    On page 66 of the 63-64 JG, section 11, "mirror and door handles", it is stated that for early 63 models with early design mirror;

    "THE MIRROR GLASS IS DARK SHADED"

    It is also stated that;

    "ALL MIRROR GLASS IS DATE CODED"

    In the "late 63 and 64 section, it is also stated that;

    "THE MIRROR GLASS IS DARK SHADED"

    If you agree or disagree with any part of this, please post and give your opinion along with any documentation that you may have.

    One or two posts will not make a difference. We need several owners of original unrestored cars, if possible, to help make these corrections.

    For a Mar64 car with A02 option also;
    Glass is clear and has date code of 1-DMI-4 (=Jan, 1964)

    Given that the date code is valid and I've verified status of car to Spring of 1966 one must conclude that at least one 1964 car was made with the clear glass on the side mirror. (If pictures are needed please email me and I will try, not sure how a picture of a mirror will turn out)

      Michael,
      If your talking about the outside mirror, I believe they were dated. Mine is 8 DMI 2 for car delivered on Oct. 1st 62. Does not appear to me to be dark shaded. Not sure about the inside mirror.

        9-DMI-2
        Outside mirror on an October built car. Can't tell if the mirror is dark shaded. How does a 'dark' shaded mirror compare to a mirror on a modern car, would the difference be evident? Need to look in the daylight. Would a 62 and below mirrow have shaded glass?

          Yes, one of the unique features of the Guide Y-50 used on Corvette is the use of a speacial coating on the mirror.

            Thanks Alan. I agree, the January mirror date would be correct for your car. Also, I agree, there should be no tint on any mirror glass for any 63-67 car. The shaded mirror was last used on 62.

              Re: 63-64 Judging Guide Questions

              In my opinion, there were no shaded outside mirrors used on any 63-67 Corvette. I believe this was a C1 item that ended at the end of the 62 model run.

              The most common, by far, rear view mirror glass in the early/1st design 63 mirror was made by Vaco, (or Vacco) and etched with their name. There was no date present.

              Like to hear from some owners of 63's with this mirrior glass.

                Re: 63-64 Judging Guide Questions

                Mike:

                My late November 1962 car has an original long base mirror with lettering I believe to be "VACO-2J". I assume the 2J is September 62.

                I will send you a couple pictures which you are free to post.

                In any event, it would be reasonable for the 63/64 Judging Guide to reflect that Vaco mirrors with (or without?) date codes were on early 63's. They do not have "__DMI__" dating!!!

                The last time my car was judged, the judges insisted that I had a replacement mirror because it didn't match the Judging Guide!!

                  Thanks Tom, excellent picture. That's exactly the same as many others I've seen. Very common mirror glass in early 63.
