    Shocking paint price

I got a quote today to paint my 54. Does $14,000 sound correct? This is me stripping it and with no body repairs. WOW, I would have never guessed it would be this high. Any suggestions? Any good paint shops in upstate NY?

Seems high to me . However you are painting a 54 and they figure that in the price . What type of paint are you considering? Some paints sell by the oz and can get up there in price. Even though you are stripping it yourself there is still a considerable amount of prep work. Dont know about NY but south of the Masion Dixon Line $4000 to $7000 would get a paint job that would please most.

Shocking !! Ridiculous sounds more in line! Hay he's a friend but still a business guy that painted my 55, 5 years ago ,and I to had it striped and ready for paint. It cost a little under 3K ,( two stage) now he's not a big shot some body Corvette painter with a name , but just a dang good painter. I don't know if you ever seen my 55 but most people at the national 05 thought it looked great, had no one say other wise .
But I was asked because guys were talking about their cost when they had their Corvette painted ( talking 10K to 15K ) I NEW they would think I was putting them on telling them what I paid and when I did they looked at me like I was BS-ing them. Oh well!

Remember I dint ask him to make the body look like glass because I drive it!!!

It is not unusual to spend $2,000+ on paint and materials for a white car. Reds and metallics, hold yer breath. And remember that materials are by far the cheapest part of a quality paint job. I am stripping a car and prepping it for paint, furnishing all materials, and expect to spend $4-5k for labor.

BJ Suggestions: Does this quote include any panel replacements? When you say no body repairs, are you talking about you or the body shop? Just primer and paint? If so, run. Does this bodyshop paint OLD corvettes on a regular basis? There is someone I have spoke to over the last couple of years in your area. His name is Len Stuart. He owns Stuarts bodyshop in NJ. He owns autobodystore.com. He is a working bodyman. Call him for opinions on the quote. He's a good guy. Some production type shops love to use bondo versus fiberglass build. Inform any shop that does bodywork for you that the under panel is important also. Bonding strips are not to be destroyed, covered up filled in, etc.. You would be amazed what is out there Under some beautiful paint jobs. I painted my 65 last year in my shop. I painted my old 57 9 years ago. I took evening classes at our local tech school on bodywork. Those classes scratched the surface and did nothing to address the bodywork needed on Corvettes. As already stated, paint, primer surfacer, sealer, body fillers, fiberglass and resin, sandpaper, etc. can run around $2000.00. Buy some books, take some classes, buy some tools, dig in or pay what they want. Still shop around. Call Len Stuart and let me know what he tells you. Good Luck DG

Shoot, I painted my old red truck, and the material costs were more like $4000...of course, I painted most it twice.

That was using PPG's good stuff...I guess you can save a little money if you go with Omni or DuPont's Nason.

Try Mike Denapole in East Herkimer NY. He did an outstnading job on my 1963 several years ago. And stills does nice work.

I live in Westchester county NY and the starting price for a paint job on a Corvette,(if you can find someone who will do it!) is $10K. I say starting because they wont firm up the price until the paint is off and they can see what they are actually dealing with and what you expect the finished product to look like. Most shops just send you away laughing as you leave.

My brother owns a shop in the area, he also has a 58 vette. He painted my 60 and made me promise not to tell anyone at any shows! Says he doesnt want anymore of that kind of work. He has 25 techs working for him and he still had the car in the shop for 7 months and I brought him the car stripped. Lost count of the number of hours that went into the prep work alone. We did a base-coat clear-coat paint job . The Materials bill for primer, paint and clear cost over $2K not counting all the various grits of sanding paper and the fuel/ energy costs for the spray booth for a couple hours! dont forget somebody has to pay for the energy!

A friend also owns a smaller shop in the area, he has a 65. He told me the other day he just turned down a paint job on a 67 for one of his good friends! same reasons. They cant make any money doing these jobs in a production shop where insurance companies will pay $70. per hour changing dented fenders on your family car. In and out in a day and a half.

Well maybe you should live in Canada. We have a local guy that does all our club cars. Waiting list is about a year. My car was there for about a year and 1/2. I didn't care for the time but there was more work involed. He had to take off the front end and realign it. Got hit more than once I guess. Got my 68 painted for about 6500.00 CDN. I gave the car to him stripped to primer. He did my 69 435hp car in 1980 and that was 2500.00 So with inflation I guess not a bad deal. Also its done to NCRS specs. He has done all years of vettes. He had 7 coats of primer from yellow to white to gray to black and then to final red oxide primer and 2 coats of final laquer paint. 2 or 3 years ago I helped an NCRS member from Sanfranciso do his car. He drove it across the border to the back yard shop. Took a plane home. A year later flew to the shop and drove it home and still saved 2500.00 Good luck with your painter quest.

I don't have a rational reason just, Everyting from EPA/liability etc. The attorneys of our country want to sue fast food joints cause they forced us all to eat french fries and get FAT. Sue gun manufacturers for forcing some idiot lunatic into shooting innocent people. I don't know. CYA DG
