    63-64 Judging Guide Question

On page 29, section 5, dash panel area, of the 3rd edition of the Judging Guide, it states:

    DEFROSTER OUTLET:

"THE DEFROSTER OUTLET TRIM IS CONSTRUCTED OF FIBERGLASS AND IS LOCATED AT THE FORWARD EDGE OF THE SPEAKER GRILLE. IT IS PAINTED IN LOW GLOSS IN THE COLOR OF THE DASH".

I think I'm a little confused on this one. Does this suggest that the duct is painted interior color or that the trim (screen?) is fiberglass?

Any suggestions on how this paragraph should be written?

    Re: 63-64 Judging Guide Question

    Michael,

Certainly just a novice, compared to you and others, but let me take a stab:

    1. The way the statement is written, it sure sounds like the trim (screen) is constructed of fiberglass, as you suggest.

    2. It also suggests the DUCT is painted interior color, for instance I have a red interior, so the DUCT would be painted low gloss RED

BTW - the way this statement and way too many similar instances is written has caused me MUCH ANGST throughout the entire JG! They are at best, vague, ambiguous, and so forth.

      Re: 63-64 Judging Guide Question

      Mike,

I'm not a '63-64 guy, nor do I stand up for status quo on many things but, let me take a stab at the statement as a judge should unless he/she knows more than the JG states.

The atatement reads in part "THE DEFROSTER OUTLET TRIM ..." and "IT IS PAINTED IN LOW GLOSS IN THE COLOR OF THE DASH." Looks like the fiberglass trim (I thought defroster outlet trim bezels were metal throughout the mid-years) should be painted to match the upper instrument panel color. According to the wording, that bezel is located between the speaker grille and the windshield. I fail to see where it speaks about the defroster duct. Maybe it could read more clearly but ... ??? Just my half penny's worth.

Happy New Year and hope to meet you at Old Town.

        Re: 63-64 Judging Guide Question

Hello; On a 63 corvette the speaker grill which sits on top of the dash assembly is painted to match the dash. The defroster duct which is mounted of underneath the dash is black fiberglass with w sheet metal mounting brackets which are Gloss black and rivited to the defrost duct. Nothing under the dash was ever painted interior color. The defrost duct, heater box, lower Y duct and the left hand snout were all raw fiberglass. I hope this helps you? Andy

OK, looks like we're all in agreement on this. If the paragraph were to be corrected, could it be something like below?

RADIO SPEAKER GRILLE AND DEFROSTER DUCT

"THE METAL RADIO SPEAKER GRILLE IS PAINTED A SEMI GLOSS COLOR THAT MATCHES THE DASH PANEL. THE BLACK FIBERGLASS DEFROSTER DUCT BELOW THE FORWARD EDGE OF THE SPEAKER GRILLE IS UNPAINTED".

            I agree.

I have a red interior also.

The area in question is red.

              Thanks Jack,

So, you're saying you agree that thew JG is incorrect and that the speaker screen should be red/dash color but not the defroster duct?

The forward edge would be the part closest to the windshield, or the front of the vehicle. Maybe the wording should be changed slightly to clarify this??

Re: Which edge is the "forward edge"?

In the 4th edition the two areas are in separate paragraphs:

                    “Defroster Outlet Trim
The defroster outlet trim is constructed of fiberglass and is located at the lower forward edge of the speaker grill. It is painted low gloss in the color of the dash.”

                    “Radio Speaker Grill
All cars, including those not equipped with the optional radio, have a speaker grille installed. The grille paint finish is low gloss matching the dash components in both sheen and color. The grille is secured from the bottom side with integral studs attached to the bottom side of the grille with speed nuts. The fit of the speaker grill is generally poor at the rear.”

I agree with Andy, the fiberglass defroster outlet duct is black fiberglass.

                        Thanks Ken,

Yes, I believe almost everyone knows that the defroster duct is unpainted black fiberglass, and that it lives under the speaker screen. Actually, I wonder if the defroster duct should be mentioned at all? Or possibly combined with the paragraph titled "radio speaker grille"?
