    68 3x2 accelerator cable

Is the L68 3x2 throttle cable different than the standard cable? I don't think the cable on my 3x2 is correct, since the engine was originally a 427/390. Could anyone possibly snap a picture of the cable/carb attachment area? I can't find the 3x2 cable for sale anywhere. Does anyone know who sells it?

    Thanks!

For 1968 L-71s, the accelerator cable is the same as other engines. Most 1969 L-71s used a cable different from the other engines, though.

The cable that will SERVICE your requirement is available from GM dealers under GM #336977.

I hope "Flairside" describes to your truck:

Thanks for the great picture! It looks like my cable is correct, so I'll have to start looking elsewhere for the problem. When I fully depress the gas pedal, the carb is only about half-way open when my cable is positioned correctly in the cable clamp. I have to slide the cable waaaayyy back in the clamp (past the area intended for clamping) to get the correct movement. I probably need to replace the pedal linkage due to wear.

Yea Jerry, my Vettes all stock Good guess, the truck is a flareside.

          flareside----

I'm afraid that there is another possibility here. I had hoped that we wouldn't be facing this one, but maybe we are.

Very early 68s used a different cable than most 68s. This cable was GM #3921609. It has been discontinued for many years. Cars which originally used this cable and require it can be identified by a 3/16" diameter pin which is brazed to the under dash accelerator lever (the "extension" attached to the rod which is attached to the accelerator pedal).

I hope that yours isn't one of these. This particular cable is not available and not reproduced.

            Re: 68 3x2 accelerator cable

The car was built Jan. 68.

I don't recall a brazed pin on the lever, so hopefully I lucked out here. I'll check for sure tonight when I get home. I do know that there is a black rod attached to the pedal that then attaches (clamped with a bolt) to a silver stamped steel lever. The cable enters a hole in the silver lever, and is held in place by a black plastic grommet. I also remember that there is some play between the rod and lever.

On second thought, I should probably just take a picture and post it...

Can the later (69-) one piece rod/lever be used on the '68 if need be?

Joe, thanks for all your help!

I believe that the 69-76 rod can be used, but the rod support must be changed to the 69 style. This support is GM-discontinued, but I believe that it's available in reproduction.

The 69-76 rod, which was still available the last time I checked, is GM #340692.
